FEARLESS: CHRISTINE RAINS

|

Monday, August 7, 2012

Today is the release date for Christine Rain's paranormal romance novella FEARLESS.

Blurb:
Abby White was seven years old when she killed the monster under her bed. Now she slays creatures spawned by the fertile imaginations of children, and the number of these nightmares are on the rise. Neither she nor her guide - a stuffed hippo named Tawa - know why.
When she rescues Demetrius from an iron prison, he pledges his life to protect hers until he can return the favor. She doesn't want the help. And how can she concentrate on her job when the gorgeous wild fae throws himself in front of her during every fight? No matter how tempting, she can't take the time to lose herself to him.

To save the children and all she loves, Abby must be truly Fearless.

To celebrate the release of her novel, Christine is also hosting a blogfest between Aug 7 - 9. The spirit guide from her novella Fearless wants to know "what was your childhood fear?"

Well, I had many fears as a child, but the one that has followed me throughout life is the fear of something coming up through the toilet. Now, I know how silly that sounds. But here's the story.

My mom was fond of horror movies, but not so fond of watching them alone. A lot of times she'd let me stay up late, or wake me up to watch them. Even as young as 10 I preferred spooky movies to cartoons (hated Road Runner) so usually I didn't mind keeping her company. I don't remember the name of the movie that really scared me the most, but it was something about crocodiles or alligators or rats or something weird living in the sewers (in New York City of all places) and coming up through the toilet to kill people. I don't know why that scared me more than anything else I'd watched on Creature Features.

Perhaps because the toilet always made funny noises; or because the only bathroom was in my parents bedroom, and we were discouraged from turning on the lights at night because my dad was sleeping and had to be up at 4a to go to work. So, I couldn't look in the toilet to see if anything was in there after the movie ended and it was time for bed. I peed in the tub. For like, a week after.

Finally it just got ridiculous even to me so of course I started using the toilet again. But I always had the light on - my dad never woke up, probably cuz he was a heavy sleeper and I didn't turn on the light until the door closed. But it took me years and years and an emergency situation to be able to use the outhouses that are mostly just a seat above a hole in the ground. Camping was never the same . .

Just when I was sure I'd put all the silliness with monsters in the plumbing behind me, along comes a novel by the horror master Stephen King. Dream Catcher. Yep; if you've read the book (or watched the movie) you know the scenes I'm talking about. Beaver, sitting on the toilet lid, keeping the nasty slug type alien monster with razor sharp teeth firmly inside while Jonsey looks through the shed for the duct tape. Do I need to say I don't use tooth picks anymore either?

Ok, so there's my story in support of Tawa and his Fearless warrior Abby White. Be sure to visit the other Child Fears blogfest participants.

I am going to have so many nightmares after reading all these monster posts today lol!

I don't think the toilet monster fear is all that uncommon, I'm sure I've heard of it before. I hope you've got that fear under control now! :D

Think a lot of people had that fear. Don't remember the movie although I've probably seen it.
Very excited for Christine!

Ooh, what a creepy monster fear! Luckily, as a guy, I get to at least keep my eye on the toilet most of the time... ;^)

Congrats to Christine!

I remember that scene all too well. I just looked over at my friend and went "uh huh, told you so." He thought my being creeped out by toilets when I was younger was stupid.

Very creepy! Toliets are so scary...
Yes, that movie gets me and I grew up, not far from Stephen King. His cousin Percy was my math teacher. He looks like him and is strange, too~

We had outhouses and my grandparent's cabin, and at night it was just as terrifying to walk outside to use it. I always imagined a giant opossum down there, waiting to bite.

A very entertaining fear. :) HIlarious that of all the other scary things you saw, this is what stuck.

Congratulations, Christina!

I remember that old movie, but I can't remember the name either. Toilets are questionable things, especially to kids. I still don't like using pit toilets because I think spiders might hide under the lid and bite me!

Thanks for sharing your monster and for helping promote my novella. :)

I can definitely relate to the toilet fear - my Mom traumatized me in a toilet-y way, years ago.

Scary chilling image. I remember that scene in DREAMCATCHER and thought why send the guy with the limp out for the tape? Both sit on the darn toilet top, the guy with two GOOD legs, slipping off and running for the tape@!! LOL.

Come check out my childhood monster! Roland

That is a great story! (and the hand coming out of the ground as the promo for Creature Feature used to freak me out bad, when I was a kid)

Once, on a very looong road trip to FA, I had no choice but to make a pit stop at a very dodgy gas station.

I kid you not, a BULL FROG jumped up out of the toilet, while I was using it. NEVER AGAIN. From that point on, I will hold it no matter how long it takes, even if I turn yellow! LOL

Fantastic story--thanks for sharing! Yeah, dark toilets in unfamiliar settings are creepy, even as an adult. And that scene from Dream Catcher is the *worst*, haha.

YUCK! I had forgotten about this fear. Not the toilet in general but outhouses. I was sure some grotesque monster was waiting down there to bite me on the butt. Thanks for the reminder. Ha, Ha, Ha.

Fantastic! Now I don't feel so alone with my toilet fears. I really thought I was weird about it - this is a kinda delicate matter to bring up in private company. I want to thank everyone for stopping by, and for supporting Christine in her novella launch. I'll be visiting around everyone's blogs. If I haven't gotten too you yet, I will; so be warned, I will find you :)

That would scare anyone... geez, I'd probably do the same:) Poor thing.

OMGosh now that is scary and to be haunted by it in later life makes it all the worse! Poor you.

Great shout out for Christine's book.

I never had that kind of fear even though for many years we had no running water and used a privy. It was having to go at night and take a lantern and walk out to the privy by myself that scared me because there was a thorn tree hanging over the path and in the shadows of the night it looked like it would reach out, grab me and make me disappear.

Stephen King always finds a way to creep into one's psyche.

I still hate port-a-potties or anything that is just a gaping hole like that, but after reading an article about snakes found in toilets (usually in an apartment), going to the bathroom on a regular toilet at night was freshly terrifying (I have a fear of snakes). There are so many scary books, stories, movies about critters in the toilet that I'm surprised anyone can be relaxed when using the bathroom in the dark!
